Northbridge House: A Contemporary Family Residence

Detail of the Northbridge House extension, where layered roof planes and a refined material palette define the contemporary architectural form.

A feature in Grand Designs Australia takes a closer look at Northbridge House, a residential project that explores the relationship between architecture, landscape and everyday family living.

Located on Sydney’s North Shore, the project transforms an existing mid-century brick house into a contemporary home designed to respond carefully to its site and surroundings. The design builds upon the existing structure, allowing the original house to remain present while introducing new spaces that open directly to the garden.

Large glazed openings, generous overhangs and carefully positioned living areas strengthen the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. The result is a home that feels both open and protected, where natural light, garden views and outdoor living play a central role in the experience of the house.

Material choices reinforce this relationship between architecture and environment. A restrained palette of timber, concrete and glass creates a calm and durable framework for family life while maintaining a strong visual connection with the garden.
